FASTag to be mandatory at toll plazas: Vehicles without tag to be fined
Thrissur: From December 1 onwards, all toll plazas in the country will turn into ‘FASTag’ tracks. With this, the vehicles without this system will not be able to cross toll plazas.
The National Highways Authority has directed the zonal offices to levy heavy amount as penalty from the vehicles without FASTag. According to the order issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, double the toll amount shall be levied as fine.
With this move, all vehicles will need to implement FASTag within 4 months. FASTag was made compulsory in new vehicles from 2017. The new decision came in view of the long wait at the toll plazas due to the increasing number of vehicles.
Only 25 percent of total toll collected in the country is collected through FASTag. In 2017, the daily transaction was Rs 30,000 which rose to Rs 8.62 lakh in 2019. The order also directs that necessary precautions should be taken in view of law and order issues.
