Thrissur: Kerala police’s official social media handle sparked yet another controversy by posting a meme based on a scene from Malayalam movie Action Hero Biju, which normalises and legitimises torture done by police. The meme received flak and the officials removed the social media post. The incident happened on Wednesday and activities like posting, editing and removal happened within hours.

Notably, the meme was shared at a time when police were in bad light after visual of a cop kicking a man, who travelled without ticket and pestered travellers in the train. The meme was of a scene in the movie in which a SI conveys to a human rights activist that he will beat criminals who annoy women. Also, many scenes in the movie itself were in bad light for glamourizing police high-handedness, colourism and other regressive portrayals.

Meanwhile, the meme was first posted with a Malayalam caption: ‘silent’. Later the post was edited and remarks which say ‘We will do our duty with complete responsibility. Ponder over the next scenes in the movie using your imagination’ were added. Over severe criticism, the post was later deleted. However, screenshot of the post has been widely circulated in the social media by citizens both in favour of police and as criticism.
