Tanur: Prakasan Vellayil, a local fisherman who witnessed the tragic boat accident at Thooval Theeram beach, said the driver continued to operate the boat despite water entering it. If the boat had been brought ashore immediately, the accident could have been prevented, he added.

He also claimed that the boat involved in the accident was not suitable for tourism.

It was a fishing boat that had been altered to look like a tourist boat, he said. Boats used for tourism typically have flat bottoms, which make them less likely to sink easily. However, the bottom of this boat was not wide enough, he added.
