Expired driving license less than 5 years can be renewed with penalty
Thiruvananthapuram: The motor vehicles department has issued an order to renew driving licenses that have expired less than 5 years ago. Although driving test is still mandatory, learner’s test is not. The learner’s license will be granted as soon as the application is given. Unlike the past, one would not have to wait for 30 days to take part in the driving test. Arrangements will be made for applicants to take the ‘special’ test once a week. Also, the applicant can take part in the driving test as soon as he/she gets the learner’s license.
Applicants need to pass only the road tests and they will exempted from ‘H’ and ‘8’ tests. The applicant can use his/her own vehicle for giving the road tests. In both the categories, a fine and fee will have to be paid along with the application, as per central government norms.
However, applicants, whose license have expired less than a year ago will be exempted from paying the fine as of now. This is because there is still a lack of clarity in Central Motor Vehicles Act regarding the same. Also, strict instructions have been given to charge sheet anyone found driving with an expired license.
