Expats can choose to spend their quarantine in tourist destinations
Kochi/Kollam: Homestay and Tourism Society (HATS) has come up with programs to make quarantine period more enjoyable. Expats coming from foreign countries can quarantine themselves in beautiful locations for a good sum of money. The program has been initiated by the Kannur unit of HATS.
Kannur was selected as it has a large proportion of expats. Houses registered as homestays can also register for this program. HATS Kannur unit president EV Harris said that since the expats should be isolated in these houses, only those owners who can afford to stay in some other place have registered for this initiative.
The homes will be handed over to the quarantined people. Kannur collector has given permission for 42 houses, including four service villas. The information about these facilities have been given to the airports also.
The quarantined people will be provided food through the Kudumbashree canteens that has been registered under responsible tourism. For those who wants to cook for themselves, essential items will be handed over at the time of check in. If needed, facilities will be arranged for Yoga, farming and gardening.
AC rooms will cost Rs 2000 to Rs 2500 and normal rooms will cost between Rs 1250 to 1750 per day.
Meanwhile, government has urged the tourism department to identifyhotels for quarantining foreign returnees. 10 hotels from each district will have to be shortlisted. Expats listed in NORKA website will be able to book these hotels directly.
The expats will be taken to these hotels on showing the booking vouchers to the district authorities upon return.
Hotel employees will be trained to look after them. Arrangements will be made to observe the quarantined people. Even those who are placed under government quarantine can also shift to these facilities.
