Kozhikode: Former Finance Minister TM Thomas Isaac dismissed the central government's move to reduce excise duty stating that tax was increased 12 times before it was reduced.

When the BJP government came to power, the tax on petrol was Rs 9.48 and Rs 3.56 for diesel. Then there is a 12-fold increase to Rs 26.77 per litre for petrol and Rs 31.47 per litre for diesel.

He said that the Modi government should first reduce the steep hike in tax instead of asking state governments to reduce their share of tax. His remark came in a Facebook post.

After the BJP came to power, the tax revenue from petroleum products would be around Rs 25 lakh crore. The government looted an average of Rs 1 lakh from a family in India in the name of petroleum tax. Most state governments have not increased taxes like the central government. Thomas Isaac claimed that the Kerala government had not increased taxes even once in the last six years.
