Muvattupuzha (Ernakulam) : A 16-year-old girl here on Tuesday robbed jewellery from a woman after threatening her and later attacked her with a hammer. The girl was taken into custody by the police based on the statements given by the woman and her neighbour. The girl admitted to having committed the crime to the police.

The girl hit Muvattupuzha native Jalaja (60) on the back of her head with a hammer after taking jewellery from her. Jalaja was alone in the house when she was attacked.

Jalaja got out of the house and called her neighbours after the attack, following which she was taken to the Muvattupuzha general hospital. She was later taken to the Kottayam medical college as the cut on her head was deep.

Based on what the locals told them, the police made the girl’s family call her. The girl, who was in the town at the time, came to her house in an autorickshaw.

The primary assumption of the police is that the girl committed the crime alone. Some of the jewellery that she robbed was retrieved. Police found a ring and an earring that she threw on the roadside.

Police have retrieved the hammer, chilli powder and other things that she used for the crime. Officials are checking if she has been involved in any other cases before. Police are preparing to record the girl’s detailed statement after presenting her before juvenile authorities.

Her motive remains unclear at this moment.
