St Mary's Basilica Kochi
Kochi: The Ernakulam St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica which witnessed protest over the unified holy mass will not open for devotees soon. The district collector has issued a directive to the police asking that the church should be opened only after ensuring that there would not be any law and order issues. Police have asked the two groups of believers to give assurance on the same and sign an agreement.
Meanwhile, the basilica association filed a complaint with the chief minister regarding its opening.
On November 27, the cathedral witnessed a clash between two groups over the issue of unified holy mass. Following the clash, police decided to shut down the premises till the matters got resolved.
The clash occurred after an argument about whether the priest should face the churchgoers or the altar during the Holy Mass.
A group of people did not allow Thrissur Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath, who is deputed by the Vatican to look after the affairs of Ernakulam diocese, to enter the cathedral. The rebel group took control of the church and closed it from inside while the official faction also shut the gates of the church from outside.
