Kochi: In a bizarre, but cruel act, a transgender girl here in Edapally allegedly burned the hand of her roommate, another transgender girl, to confirm whether the latter was possessed by evil spirits.
The act that happened last December came out only on April 2, when the affected girl formally raised a police complaint about the matter.
According to Ahalya, who is a first-year student of Maharajas College, her roommate burned her hand with camphor.
The complaint says that Arpitha burned Ahalya to confirm whether the latter was possessed by evil spirits.
Though those around tried to douse the camphor, Arpitha objected and wanted the fire to fully consume the camphor.
While Ahalya decided to visit a doctor for the burns, some of them restricted her as it will escalate into a police case. They advised applying some medicines to heal the injury from burns. For the first two days, the condition of the hand was not problematic, but the injury worsened over time.
Finally, Ahalya had to approach a hospital at Kalamassery for treating the burns, but to avoid the police she maintained that she herself did the act.
Ahalya revealed that she had feared whether those living with her would isolate her if a complaint is raised.
Later, Ahalya shifted from the place where she was staying. Following that, she revealed the ordeal she faced to her friends in the trans community. She said that she though still fears what the future course will be, complained with the support assured by the community members.
