Midnight Half Marathon: they ran to fulfill the dream


Around 2000 attended the marathon organized as a celebration of womanhood conveying the message that the streets are safe and free for women also in the night.

Kochi: The "Grihalakshmi Women’s Midnight Half Marathon", organized by Mathrubhumi in Kochi on Saturday night turned out to be huge success.

The winners

21 km: Sinimol Paulose, Bilna babu, Aleena (Mar Basil HSS, Kothamangalam)

5 km: Arathy R, Nivya Benny (Mar Basil HSS Kothamangalam), Ishika Barak (Navy Children’s School)

3 km: Aksa Joby, Josma George Mar Basil HSS (Kothamangalam), Mallika K M (Bengaluru)

The torch for the rally was brought by Kerala Sports Council President Anju Bobby George and actress Mamta Mohandas, who are the brand ambassadors of the midnight marathon. Both handed over the torch to social activist Dr Sunitha Krishnan. Amidst the cheer and excitement, they lit the marathon flame.

The spirits soared even as Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala arrived at the venue at 9.30 pm on Saturday to launch the event.

Kochi Mayor Saumini Jayan, K V Thomas MP, Hibi Eden MLA, District panchayat president Asha Sanil, Ernakulam District Collector M G Rajamanickam, Kochi City police commissioner M P Dinesh and GCDA chairman N Venugopal offered their wishes.

Exactly at 10.30, Ramesh Chennithala flagged off the marathon.

In a short while, the Celebrity run, 5-km Liberty run and 3-km Unity run too followed.
