Thiruvananthapuram: With the state receiving less rains in south west monsoon (Edavapathi), the threat of drought is looming large. If the northeast monsson (Thulavarsham) also deceives, the state will face severe water shortage next summer.
There is shortage of 31.8 per cent rainfall this season till now from the usual rains that the state has been receiving in the past. The shortage of rainfall in ten districts is more than 25 per cent.
The south west monsoon started in June. However, there was shortage of rain after mid-July. Large amount of water has not seeped into the soil. Hence, there will be shortage of underground water. The wells have started to dry up in the high ranges.
Last year, the state received 26 per cent less rainfall than normal during south west monsoon. Now, the state pins its hopes on north east monsoon (Thulavarsham), which lashes the state in the months of October, November and December. If the state does not manage to tap the rain water in the soil during that period, it would have to run hither and thither for drinking water.
Wayanad, with 59.2 per cent, is the district that received least rainfall.
