Malayali woman oncologist found murdered in Chennai


The body of Dr Rohini Premkumari (62), native of Kollam district, was found near the garden of her house at Gandhi-Irvin road in Egmore around 12.30 pm on Sunday.

Chennai: A Malayali woman oncologist was found dead at her residence here on Sunday.

The body of Dr Rohini Premkumari (62), native of Kollam district, was found near the garden of her house at Gandhi-Irvin road in Egmore around 12.30 pm on Sunday.

Her hands were tied and a tape was put on her mouth. An injury inflicted with a weapon on her head is suspected to be the reason for her death.

Rohini Premkumar, an expert oncologist who served in Adayar Cancer Institute and also the VS Hospital in Chetpet, was staying along with her nonagenarian mother Subhadra Nair.

Rohini’s husband John Kuruvilla had died in accident a few years ago. Her lone daughter Resmi Niveditha is staying in another part of the city.

Subhadra had seen Rohini speaking to on phone around 10 pm on Saturday. Rohini, who stayed in the first floor of the house, used to attend to her mother. Though Subhadra tried to call her daughter over phone twice in the night, there was no response. As she failed to turn up in the morning, Subhadra sought help from her former colleague Paramasivam.

Paramasivam along with his soon arrived and carried out a search when they found her body. Immediately, they informed police. The body has been shifted to the mortuary of Royapettah Government Hospital.
