Deputy Tehsildar Haris Ibrahim and clerk Murukan of Assistant Cardamom Office in Kumily were suspended pending investigation in connection with the incident.

The illegal lease was issued by the Assistant Cardamom Settlement Office in Kumily for a 4-acre government-owned land included in survey number 34/1 at Cement Palam in Chinnakanal village. The contract for 20 years was written by the officials on July 9. The land was illegally leased to a person identified as Chinnakanal native Plakkad Thomas Kuuvila for Rs 5000 per acre.

After the collector found the irregularity in checking, the land was taken back last month. Following this, action was taken against the concerned officials. The authorities are examining some other moves initiated by the office recently. The revenue officials are taking strict action against land encroachment in Chinnakanal.
