Alappuzha: Devaswom Board employees have become exhausted by counting the coins received as offerings at the Sabarimala temple. Over 600 employees have been counting them for the past 69 days. They cannot leave the premises before completion of counting. The temple was closed last week. The board will have to grant special leave to the employees to compensate for their working hours.

The counting of currency notes has been completed but only one of the three heaps of coins has so far been completed. It will take two more months to count these coins, it is estimated. Coins and notes worth Rs 119 crore have been counted so far. As per the estimate, coins worth around Rs 15-20 crore are yet to be counted.

Employees spend 9 hours a day counting the coins. Coins of Re 1, Rs 2, Rs 5 and Rs 10 are first put in a machine to separate them and are counted afterwards.
