Palakkad: One person died and 15 others were injured in a crowd crush after an elephant ran amok amid a temple festival in Kallekkad, Palakkad. The deceased has been identified as Balasubramaniyan (63), a native of Vallikkode, Palakkad.
The incident took place around 10 pm on Friday at Mariyamman Temple in Pirayiri. The elephant named Puthur Ganeshan went berserk when the fireworks began as part of the temple rituals.
As per reports, Balasubramaniyan tried to escape as the elephant ran, but he fell down. He was soon rushed to the district hospital, but could not be saved. He is assumed to have died on the spot.
Meanwhile, the elephant, which also destroyed the vehicles parked in the area, was brought under control by the mahouts, who pulled its tail and made the tusker calm down. Following which, the jumbo was shifted from the area on a truck.
Meanwhile, those who sustained injuries in the crowd crush were shifted to the Palakkad district hospital and a private hospital in the area. The injured are Kumaran (43), Jincy (25), Shenthil (43), Sajina (39), Sajitha (14), Anusree (13), Sadhika (14), Aniha (6), Murukan (52), Rajitha (44), Krishnakripa (20), Kannan (49), Mahalakshmi (6), Jyothi (32) and Kumaran (52).
The body of the deceased has been kept at the mortuary in Palakkad district hospital.
