Kochi: The Election Commission made it clear in the Kerala high court that the election to the vacant Rajya Sabha seats will take place before current term of assembly ends. The high court recorded the stand of the counsel of the Election Commission (EC).
Though the EC had earlier decided to conduct the election to Rajya Sabha seats on April 12, this was postponed later. CPM and the assembly secretary approached the court against this move pointing out that the election should be held before the tenure of the current MPs ends. With this, the court sought explanation from the EC.
However, the EC responded that the cannot accurately state when the election can be held. The counsel of the EC stated in the court that they will take action to conduct the election within the tenure of the current assembly.
It will take 19 days to complete the procedures after the election is notified. If the election should be held before April 21, the notification should be issued within two days. However, there are some technical issues which is why the EC is unable to give a statement, the counsel said. The petitions will be considered again on April 7.
