Election campaign for 1st phase ends; no high-voltage campaign due to COVID situation

Thiruvananthapuram: The election campaign for the first phase of the local body polls in the state ended on Sunday evening. Polling will be held in five districts on Tuesday.

Considering the COVID situation, high voltage campaign was avoided. Polling will take place in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Idukki districts on December 8.

The election campaign was conducted without any rallies, marches and public meetings adhering to the COVID protocol. Instead of crowded campaigns, rallies and meetings were conducted virtually. Social media was the major platform for campaign.

There are a total of 88.26 lakh voters in the five districts where polling will take place in the first phase. Among them, 41,58,341 are males, 46,68,209 are females and 70 are transgenders.

24,584 candidates are contesting the polls in these five districts. There are 6465 candidates in Thiruvananthapuram, 5723 in Kollam, 5463 in Alappuzha, 3699 in Pathanamthitta and 3234 in Idukki.
