Kochi: The official Facebook page of Ernakulam district collector Dr Renu Raj was heavily trolled on Sunday after she declared holiday only for school students from Classes 1 to 7 in the regions affected by the Brahmapuram plant fire.

Taking to Facebook, several people slammed the collector’s move and asked why the students of other classes were excluded from the decision. “Aret the lungs of those above 7th grade like sponges?” wrote one user in the comments below the collector’s post.

“Won’t children above 7th class face problems due to air pollution? Or will the smoke change paths when nearing high school students,” asked another on social media.

The decision to declare holiday for students on Monday was taken in the wake of reports corroborating the presence of smoke in regions adjoining Brahmapuram and as a precautionary move to avert health-related issues.

The holiday is applicable for kindergartens, day care centres and schools in the following local bodies (for Classes 1 to 7- Govt/Aided/Unaided/CBSE/ICSE):

  • Vadavucode-Puthencruz panchayat
  • Kunnathunad panchayat
  • Kizhakkambalam panchayat
  • Thrikkakara municipality
  • Tripunithura municipality
  • Maradu municipality
  • Kochi municipal corporation
