Kochi: The Enforcement Directorate submitted the charge sheet in the Nedumbassery gold smuggling case of 2013. As many as 14 people, including customs officials, are charged in the case.
The prime accused is Mahe native TK Fayas, who was in the news for visiting the accused in TP Chandrasekharan murder case in a Arabic attire. Customs former officers C Madhavan, P P Sunil Kumar, Anil Kumar, Fayas' wife PC Shabna, Kozhikode native Abdul Rahman Haris, wife Arifa, VP Asifa, YM Subair, K Abdul Rahim, Ashraf Kallungal, Abdullah Koyathankandi, Faisal Theethikott, KR Ranjith are the other accused in the case. The charge sheet was submitted at the Kozhikode Principal Sessions Court. CBI and Customs have submitted separate charge sheets earlier.
On September 19, 2013, a total of 20 kg of gold was seized from Arifa and Asifa who arrived at Nedumbassery airport from Dubai. They exited the airport through the green channel. Customs had received a tip that Haris was smuggling contraband. When questioned, Haris said that his wife was bringing the gold.
The agency found that the gold was smuggled as per the instructions of TK Fayas. The Customs preventive section arrested him when he tried to escape to Dubai. Fayas has smuggled gold through Karipur and Thiruvananthapuram airports as well, Customs said.
