ED fears Swapna's recent revelations aims to sabotage investigation

Kochi: The investigating agency fears that revealing details of the affidavit submitted in court by Swapna Suresh aims to sabotage the investigation into gold smuggling case. The recent remarks from Swapna came amidst ED planning to continue probe into the case.

According to the probe team, the affidavit contains details identical to the statements she had given earlier before the probe team. However, Swapna revealed a few more details concerning the case in her affidavit.

However, the customs are sceptical about her recent revelations due to lack of evidence. Earlier, customs failed to find evidence over Swapna's claim that former speaker P Sreeramakrishnan bribed a Gulf country Ruler for a land deal in Dubai. Citing lack of evidence, the probe team submitted a charge sheet without including these allegations. Customs viewed that there is no evidence to back Swapna's claims. However, she recently released these to the media.

The ED view that recent revelations in the case will help the accused prepare and destroy the evidence. If the affidavit is filed in court, it is a public record and contains details given in a confidential statement. Therefore, it was not right on her part to go public with these confidential details.

According to the court rule, nothing from a confidential statement should be leaked. Legal experts view this as a wrong decision on her part.
