EC defers bypolls in 7 states including Kerala due to COVID-19 crisis


Apart from Kerala, bypolls scheduled in Bihar, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh have also been postponed.

New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) has decided to postpone the Lok Sabha and Assembly bypolls in India in view of the challenges caused by the COVID-19 outbreak. Sources close to the commission reported that a decision on conducting the bypolls will be taken once the situation in the country improves.

In Kerala, bypolls to 7 Assembly constituencies including Chavara and one parliamentary constituency have been postponed. Apart from the challenges from COVID-19 outbreak, the Election Commission pointed out that most of the officials are engaged in disaster management activities during the monsoon. In this situation, it is not possible to conduct the polls, observed the commission.

Earlier, the Kerala state election officer also had informed the Election Commission regarding the practical issues in conducting bypolls in Chavara and Kuttanad constituencies.

Apart from Kerala, bypolls scheduled in Bihar, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh have also been postponed.
