Getting a duplicate driving licence will burn a hole in your pocket from now. The charge for procuring a duplicate drivers licence has been doubled. Moreover, the applicants have to pay additional charges for the card and the service.
The fees for duplicate drivers licence was increased from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000. Applicants have to pay Rs 260 more for the card and for the service. In short, a duplicate driving license will cost Rs 1,260.
The fee was hiked along with the increase in number of fancy numbers. According to the Motor Vehicles Act, the central government decides the rate for such services. However, states can increase the service fee.
Although the applicants are charged Rs 200 for smart card, only laminated cards are given. Though the Motor Vehicle Department had decided to switch to the central printing system that provides driving licence as smart cards, it is yet to be implemented.
Officials expect that driving licences can be given in the form of smart cards in the beginning of 2021.
