DRI seizes cocaine worth Rs 520 cr hidden in boxes of green apple

Kochi: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized cocaine worth Rs 520 crore, allegedly smuggled by Vijin Varghese and Mansoor Thachamparambil, who were involved in drug trade under the cover of fruit import. While drugs worth Rs 1470 crore was seized from a truck carrying imported oranges on September 30, the DRI sleuths found cocaine worth Rs 520 crore in a green apple cart on Saturday.

Mansoor’s enterprise More Fresh, centered in Johannesburg, carried out import of cocaine by utilising the licence of Yemito International Foods India Private Limited in Kochi owned by Vijin Varghese. DRI could confiscate psychotropic substances worth Rs 1990 crore within a week.

DRI has already arrested accused Vijin Varghese and sought the aid of Interpol to nab the suspected key conspirator Mansoor Thachamparambil. DRI had seized 198 kg methamphetamine and 9 kg cocaine in the initial raid.
