The vehicle which was rammed into waiting shed

Kottayam: A lorry driver had a narrow escape after getting trapped inside the vehicle following a road accident at Ponkunnam here on Tuesday. He was rescued following a 90-minute-long operation jointly carried out by locals and fire and safety personnel. The injured driver has been identified as Manoj Mathew, a native of Idukki.

The lorry which carried cloth to Pathanamthitta from Perinthalmanna reportedly rammed into a bus shelter on Punalur-Muvattupuzha Highway. The incident took place around 7 am on Tuesday. The vehicle lost control at the Second Mile region and rammed into a bus shelter nearby. The vehicle got stuck in the bricks of the building and the driver got trapped inside the vehicle. The onlookers intervened and informed the fire force. The rescue operation was prolonged as the Fire Force personnel were unable to lift the front portion of the vehicle.

Later, another unit of fire and safety personnel unit rushed to the spot. Finally, the joint efforts of officials and locals turned out successful in lifting the front portion of the vehicle.

Following this, the driver was rushed to Kanjirappilly General Hospital. Later, he was shifted to Kottayam Medical College for a detailed checkup.
