Former Congress president and former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi on Thursday took his official social media handles and expressed his shock over the death of a woman doctor at a government hospital in Kollam, after being stabbed by a patient.
On Facebook, Gandhi shared a screenshot of the media report on the incident and noted that the safety and security of healthcare professionals must be among the government’s top priorities.
He expressed condolences to Vandana's family, friends and colleagues. “Insensitive comments by Government representatives on a tragedy like this is highly condemnable,” he pointed out in his Facebook post.
He also called attention to the drug abuse connection to the incident. "Strong law enforcement measures to deal with the drug menace is also the need of the hour, today. Police procedures in handling de-addiction situations must also be reviewed.”
The doctor -- Vandana Das -- was stabbed repeatedly by the man -- G Sandeep, a school teacher -- early on Wednesday morning and succumbed to her injuries a few hours later. According to police, Sandeep out of the blue stabbed the house surgeon when she was dressing his wounds. Having grabbed scissors from the dressing room, Sandeep, who was reportedly under treatment in a deaddiction centre, stabbed her six times causing injuries to her abdomen and back.
Das, a native of the Kaduthuruthy area of Kottayam district, was the only child of her parents. She was a house surgeon at Azeezia Medical College Hospital and worked at the taluk hospital as part of her training.
