Minister R Bindu, Kanam Rajendran

Thiruvananthapuram: CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran on Thursday slammed the Minister for Higher Education R Bindu over the controversy of the re-appointment of Kannur University Vice-Chancellor Dr Gopinath Raveendran. He opined that the minister has no power to recommend the VC or to write a letter to the Governor regarding this.

Kanam criticised the minister following the state council meeting of CPI in which the minister’s actions were condemned.

The former ministers and former syndicate members in the state council have raised severe allegations against the minister. However, Kanam refrained from answering the question of whether the minister abused her power.

Governor Arif Mohammed Khan on December 8 wrote to chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan to take over the chancellorship of state universities citing a lack of independence. He slammed the government for recommending the reappointment of Kannur University VC. However, the Kerala High Court on Wednesday dismissed the petition against the reappointment.
