Double track on Chingavanam–Changanassery route soon to be completed
Changanassery: Train service will begin on the Chingavanam–Changanassery new track within 4 months. The railway officers have decided to conduct a trial service on Kuruppanthara-Ettumanoor and Chingavanam–Changanassery routes in July.
Both the tracks will be commissioned in August. The work of double track from Ettumanoor to Chingavanam is yet to be completed. The railway expects to finish this work by March 2020. After this work is completed, two trains can simultaneously run on Ernakulam – Kayamkulam route. The slow progress of the work is due to the delay in land acquisition in Chingavanam – Ettumanoor area. There is 6 hectares of land yet to be acquired in the area, as informed by the railway.
Renovation of Kottayam railway station and construction of two new overbridges need more time to complete. Two new platforms and new four lane track will be built in Kottayam station. The track doubling started in 2003. Double track in 78 km out of the total 114 km has been completed from Ernakulam to Kuruppanthara and from Kayamkulam to Mavelikkara. Though fund was allotted for the work in every railway budgets, the issues with land acquisition delayed the work.
