Dollar smuggling case: Customs to quiz drivers at UAE consulate
Thiruvananthapuram: Customs will interrogate drivers at the UAE consulate on Monday in connection with the probe into the dollar smuggling case. As per the reports, drivers of the consulate general and attache will be interrogated.
Earlier, sources close to the customs revealed that Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan will be summoned for an interrogation related to the case. It is learned that the customs will serve notice to the Speaker next week.
Swapna Suresh and PS Sarith, the key accused in the gold smuggling case, have given statements that the Speaker directed them to deliver a bag containing dollars at the UAE consulate office.
This statement has dragged the Speaker to the case. The statement of the two accused recorded before the magistrate and customs raised serious allegations against the Speaker. Customs officials are planning to summon the Speaker to the Kochi office next week.
Earlier, Swapna and Sarith had named many VIPs including the Speaker in their previous statements to Customs. As the duo repeated the same in the statement before the magistrate, the customs officials have decided to quiz the Speaker, sources said.
As per the statement of the duo, the Speaker invited them to a flat, handed over a bag and directed them to deliver it to the UAE consulate office. Following his direction, the duo took the bag to the UAE consulate office.
