Documents show Calicut university too granted extra marks to pass students
Kottayam: Documents suggests that Calicut university has also indulged in giving liberal marks in 2012. Stats show that over 500 students were able to pass the examination when compared to MG university where 190 students were benefitted.
Calicut university had given certain students up to 20 marks to get the degrees. This was granted to students who failed in any one of their papers during the course of their 8 semesters. The number of graduates increased when the university granted 20 marks to those students who secured at least 50% of the marks required for passing.
Difference between what happened in MG and Calicut universities
The syndicate passed the suggestion that was put forward by the academic council. The action was based on the moderation instructed by pass board in each semester. The syndicate took the decision to grant moderation in that subject in which the student failed. The order was to be made practical from 2008, as per instruction.
And when the syllabus changed, decision was taken to pass all those who had failed previously.
The matter is pending before the academic council.
The maximum moderation marks that can be allowed is 5. One mark was decided to be granted during the adalat. The file was sent to the academic council defying the section.
The 5 marks granted by the syndicate was excluding the moderation marks recommended by pass board. It is not clear till which year the moderation is applicable.
