Doctor resigns as no action initiated against police officer who beat him up amid Covid duty

Mavelikkara: A doctor working at Mavelikkara district hospital here resigned from service in protest over not taking any action against a police officer who manhandled him amid Covid duty. Dr Rahul Mathew informed through a Facebook post that he is resigning.

The incident took place on May 14. Civil police officer Abhilash Chandran beat up Dr Rahul Mathew alleging lapses in treatment. Abhilash's mother was hospitalised due to severe Covid infection but her life could not be saved. Following this, Abhilash came to the hospital next day and beat up Dr Rahul.

The doctors in the hospital have been staging a strike for the last 40 days demanding action against the police officer who manhandled Rahul. However, no action was initiated against the concerned officer yet, Rahul pointed out. In protest over this, he decided to resign from service.
