Thiruvananthapuram: Electricity minister K Krishnankutty requested activists in the state not to block the hydro-electrical projects like in the case of Athirappilly.
We are not considering the Athirappilly project at this moment. But other projects cannot be obstructed in the name of Athirappilly. This government will produce 1,500 MW more electricity by completing the second stage of Idukki and Sabarigiri projects, he said.
The coal shortage is affecting us. Hence, we must produce electricity from hydel projects at cheaper rates. We now lack 400 MW during nights. Projects with a cumulative capacity of 200 MW are underway. If the rest can also be met from hydel projects, we can retain the current rates of the retail sales, he said. He requested the cooperation of everyone for this.
The country is facing a coal shortage. The state government has requested the KSEB consumers to turn off unnecessary switches in the evenings to reduce the load during peak hours.
