Dispute between Orthodox-Jacobite factions at Kattachira; Prohibitory orders enforced
Alappuzha: A serious dispute erupted between the two faction of believers regarding conduct of prayers at St Mary’s church, Kattachira near Kayamkulam. The clash occurred between the Syrian Jacobite church and Malankara Orthodox Syrian, the two faction of believers in the church. Following the dispute, district collector enforced prohibitory orders in the area.
Concerning the ownership of the church, a dispute is going on between the two factions for a long time. The clash erupted when the Orthodox faction on Saturday morning arrived at the church for celebrating mass claiming that the Supreme Court ruled the case in favour of them. Comng to know that the Orthodox faction was coming, the Jacobite faction camped in the church. The Orthodox believers claim that the apex court verdict came last week in favour of them.
Police interfered when the dispute was getting into a more serious fight. Based on the report of police, district collector enforced prohibitory orders in the area for 14 days.
