Thiruvananthapuram: The Left Democratic Front decided to install smart metres under Kerala State Electricity Board only after a detailed study. CITU state general secretary Elamaram Kareem had recommended a study on prepaid smart metres during a meeting held on Thursday.

The smart metre project is a strategy of Centre to privatise the electricity production and distribution in the country, alleged Elamaram Kareem. The workers’ unions have been demanding to re-examine a reform introduced as part of the Electricity Act, he added.

Minister of Electricity K Krishnankutty replied that an expert panel has been constituted to study the same.
