Denial of treatment to children in Malappuram; Family suffers extreme poverty
Kalikavu (Malappuram): In connection with the incident in which four children were denied treatment and were tortured, it has been found that the family was suffering from extreme poverty. The four children and their mother were shifted to government shelter home due to health issues.
The ignorance of the family led them to superstition. They denied medical treatment and education to the children due to financial crisis. They approached wizards in order to protect the health of the children and to overcome the financial troubles, it is learnt.
The family were residing at Kembinkunnu in Karuvarakundu earlier. They had huge debts after marrying off their daughter to Chavakkad. Thus they had to sell their house and two cent land to clear the debts. They paid off a debt of Rs 50,000, but became homeless.
When a baby was born to the married off daughter, she ended the marriage and came back to stay with parents. The family was staying in rented house at various places. The father of the woman was unable to work due to ailments and he used to beg for a living.
When the family were staying at a rented house in Chembakassery, the woman had an affair with a man in the neighbourhood and had three kids with him. With this, they were in severe financial crisis. By the time, the woman’s affair also ended and they had to leave the rented house.
The family reached the 4 cent colony at Poongod in Kalikavu as a shelter without rent. They started living in the colony without any documents and made plastic shed as shelter. They were starving after the woman’s father fell ill.
Though volunteers used to provide them food, nobody were aware of their health or other details. The locals filed a complaint in the Childline after the weak child was spotted by some outsiders.
The authorities said that the family was struggling with poverty which is why they failed to take care of other things. Also others did not try to invite attention of authorities to their issue.
