Delay in paddy procurement: Farmer attempts suicide in Kottayam
Ettumanoor: Disappointed with the delay in paddy procurement, a farmer attempted suicide here on Monday. It is for the second time between two weeks, suicide attempt of a farmer is reported in the district.
A similar incident was reported in Kallara last week.
Thomas (50), a farmer, attempted suicide by pouring petrol over himself at Neendoor Makkothara Noorupara paddy field. The incident took place around 8.30 am on Monday.
The farmer poured petrol on himself and issued a suicide threat. Police rushed to the spot and convinced the man and averted a disaster. The farmer cultivated in 50-acre paddy field.
Over hundreds of farmers staged a protest here. They blocked lorries which set off to procure paddy from other fields. They also set fire paddy to mark their protest. The farmers laid siege at the paddy office in Kottayam.
13,000 quintal paddy collected from 400 farmers at Noorupara-Makkothara, Neendoor-Kaippuzhakkari, Kaippuzha-Kaippuzhakkari paddy fields is piled up here for procurement. The farmers are worried over the summer rains as the procurement gets delayed.
With the rain, farmers will be forced to remove the paddy from the field. So, they would not be able to get a fair price from the mill owners.
Even after two weeks from harvesting, the mill owners under Supplyco are not ready to procure the paddy. The mill owners are demanding a discount of Rs 6 per quintal.
At the same time, paddy on 280 acre Virippukala field, 180 acre Thazhathekuzhi field and 80 acre Kettinakam field are ready for harvest.
The delay in procurement hit the farmers who are facing a financial crisis due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Paddy officer will hold talks with the farmers on Tuesday.
