The results of samples collected from Idukki on Sunday and Monday will be available only on Wednesday.

Kattappana: COVID-19 test results were not received in Idukki for the second consecutive week on Tuesday. Unavailability of test results from Thalappady in Kottayam was cited as the reason.

Meanwhile, the lab at Thalappady said that tests will not be conducted on Mondays as the lab is disinfected.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Idukki is rising sharply. There was a 72 percent increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the district in just 20 days. Idukki had reported 109 virus cases in the first 107 days. However, 294 cases have been reported in the last 20 days.

Moreover, there are confirmed and unconfirmed COVID-19 fatalities. 131 people contracted the virus through contact. Among them, the sources of 30 patients have not been identified. As the nearest test lab is located at Thalappady, it takes two days to procure the test results.

The lab officials at Thalappady said that tests will not be conducted on Mondays as the lab is disinfected on that day every week. The procedure is done based on a government directive. This means that the results of samples collected from Idukki on Sunday and Monday will be available only on Wednesday.

This is creating a crisis in the coronavirus prevention activities in Idukki district. Collector H. Dineshan said he would investigate the matter.
