Oommen Chandy - VS Achuthanandan
Thiruvananthapuram: The additional district sessions court here on Thursday dismissed the Principal Sub-Court verdict in a defamation case against former Chief Minister and CPM veteran VS Achuthanandan. Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy filed a defamation case against the CPM leader over his remarks on the solar case. While considering Chandy’s plea, the lower court issued a verdict asking the CPM leader to pay compensation of Rs 10,10,000 to the former.
But Achuthanandan approached the additional district sessions court by questioning the verdict. On Wednesday, additional district sessions court judger R Jayakrishnan dismissed the lower court’s verdict.
The incident pertaining to the case happened in August 2013. During an interview with a private TV channel, Achuthanandan alleged that Oommen Chandy formed a company to do corruption. Oommen Chandy filed a defamation case against this statement and the court directed VS to pay a compensation of Rs 10,10,000.
However, VS in his appeal pointed out that neither evidence was submitted nor the contentions were scientifically proved before the court. The counsel for VS argued that Principal Sub-Court issued the verdict by examining the handwritten excerpts of a TV interview given by Chandy.
