Kochi: High Court directed the Chief Wildlife Warden to permit the farmers hunt the wild boars which wreak havoc in their agricultural lands. The order has to be implemented within a week. Justice PB Suresh Kumar raised this interim order while hearing petitions filed by a group of farmers including Thamarassery native KV Sebastian and Thomas Thomas from Elanthoor, Pathanamthitta.
The petition stated the destructions caused by the wild boars in farm lands adjacent to the forests of Kozhikode, Malappuram and Pathanamthitta districts. State government has already requested the Central Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to declare wild boars as vermin in those areas with severe boar attacks. But the ministry had not responded on this request.
When the wild boars got enlisted in the category of vermin, farmers can hunt and kill them. The High Court has intervened and declared the interim order based on the provisions of Wildlife Protection Act at a time when the central ministry delayed to respond.
