Decision on water tariff hike soon: K. Krishnankutty
Thiruvananthapuram: State Minister for Water Resources, K. Krishnankutty on Wednesday said that a decision regarding increasing the water tariff will be taken soon.
Speaking to Mathrubhumi News, Krishnankutty said that the decision was being taken as the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) was facing severe financial difficulties.
“A final decision in this regard will be taken after discussions with the Chief Ministers and other ministers,” Krishnankutty said. At present, Rs 4 is being charged for 1000 liters of water. Moreover, up to 15,000 liters of water is provided up to BPL families for free. As a result of this, the KWA is facing a loss of Rs 365 crore.
“I believe that the tariff hike is necessary. But a decision will be taken only after studying how it would affect all sectors of people,” Krishnankutty said
Water tariff was hiked for the last time in 2009. Though the KWA had sought a tariff hike, the government had refused. With the increase in electricity charges, KWA’s expenses will also increase. This will force KWA into severe financial difficulties.
