Kochi: Njarackal police have arrested Amal Dev, a cop of Armed Reserve (AR) camp, Ernakulam, in a theft case. The accused allegedly stole 10-sovereign gold from his neighbour, who was his 'close friend'.
According to police, Amal stole the gold chain of his neighbour Nithin’s wife. Nateshan, father of Nithin, told the police that the chain went missing after Amal’s visit to their house.
Reports said Amal was debt-ridden and was playing an online rummy game. It is learnt that he owes lakhs of rupees.

His plan reportedly was to sell off the gold and settle the debts. Amal is also facing an allegation of stealing Rs 75,000 from AR Camp. Following that incident, he was on medical leave. The new development comes at this juncture.
The accused will be produced before court after evidence collection at the crime scene, said an official.
The development comes at a time when the police officer booked for stealing mango from a shop in Kanjirappally managed to settle the case against him.
