Kollam: The frequency of violent attacks on doctors is alarmingly high, with the latest victim being Vandana Das. The fact that the perpetrator committed the act while under police watch is a matter of great concern.
The incident which shocked the state happened at Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital on Wednesday early morning, around 5 AM. The culprit Sandeep, a native of Kollam district, stabbed the lady doctor multiple times. Four others, including police officials, were injured in the incident.

On Tuesday night, Sandeep, who had recently returned home, got into a verbal altercation with his relatives. The police were called and they took to hospital for treatment of a wound on his leg.
As per the statements given by witnesses, Sandeep turned violent and tried to attack one of his relatives at first. He caught hold of a pair of scissors and headed towards people around him.
A medical officer and Vandana, who were on duty at that time, tried to flee the scene. Sadly, Vandana wasn’t lucky enough to survive the day.
Sandeep brutally attacked her, stabbing her multiple times on the neck and chest. A home guard and a few police officers were also injured during the incident.
More people arrived at the scene before finally bringing down the perpetrator.
The young lady doctor who was critically injured was rushed to KIMS Health in Thiruvananthapuram, but succumbed to the injuries.
As per reports coming in from the hospital, the deep cuts on her neck proved fatal.
Vandana Das, a native of Kottayam district, was a house surgeon at Azeezia medical college. She was posted for a one month long duty at the Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital. Protest demonstrations by health officials and medical students are happening across the state, condemning the brutal murder of the young lady doctor.
Condemning the death of Vandana Das, Health Minister Veena George said that "the inexperienced house surgeon would have been terrified by the sudden attack, giving her little options to escape the situation."
