Death of woman, son in Vypin: Kins allege police apathy, BJP leader’s intervention for accused
Vypin: The family of the woman and son who died in a fire in Vypin, has come out against the 'police apathy' and alleged intervention of a BJP leader for the accused in the case.
A 42-year-old woman named Sindhu and her son Athul were found seriously injured in their house at Vypin on Sunday and sustained burn injuries on their bodies. Locals and family members rushed them to a hospital. However, Sindhu succumbed to injuries on Sunday itself while her son Athul who was in critical condition died on Monday morning. According to the neighbours, a fire broke out in their room at around 6 am. On the way to the hospital, Sindu reportedly named her neighbour Dileep for causing them this harm. Notably, Sindhu, who lost her husband 17 years ago, had filed a complaint against Dileep in Njarakkal police station citing indecent behaviour.
Dileep has been taken into police custody over the incident. However, police have not confirmed whether the incident was a homicide or suicide.
According to Sindhu’s brother Jojo, a BJP leader was present at the time when Njarakkal police called up both the parties over her complaint. The BJP leader has requested them to settle the case as soon as possible, said Jojo. He alleged that the death of her sister and her son happened due to the lackadaisical approach of the police. He added that Sindhu, who lost her husband 17 years ago, was fostering her son by working as a sweeper at a hospital.
Similarly, Sindhu’s mother claim that there was no proactive move from the police over the complaint. Even Jojo was attacked, she said. “Dileep is a BJP activist. There are many behind him,” she alleged.
Meanwhile, the forensic experts visited the place and collected samples. A matchbox that is believed to be used to light the fire was found in the room.
