Death of migrant workers: Police prevented from removing bodies of victims
Palakkad: Migrant workers at Kanjikode have staged a protest in connection with the death of 3 fellow workers on Monday. They have refused to hand over the body of Jharkhand native Hari Om, who is one of the victims. Alleging that the death was a murder, migrant workers demanded a compensation of Rs 50 lakh each for the families of the deceased workers.
The victims have been identified as Hari Om, Kanhai and Aravind Kumar. The incident happened on Monday at 10.30 pm. The bodies were found on the railway track near Kanjikode IIT campus.. Police said that as per primary observation, the victims died after being hit by a train. However, other migrant workers refused to believe this. They claim that Hari Om was beaten to death by the locals.
The protesting migrant workers did not allow police and the fire and rescue team to remove the bodies of the victims last night. Meanwhile, an altercation broke out between the workers and police. The workers stopped the police after they took Hari Om’s body inside the IIT campus.
More police officers reached from Palakkad later. The bodies of two victims were transferred to the district hospital by police. The post mortem of these bodies will be done only after COVID tests. However, further action will be taken only after taking Hari Om’ s body to the hospital as well.
Over 100 labourers had gathered at the place in protest. The deceased were contract workers at the IIT campus.
