Kottayam: The mortal remains of a man who went missing after being swept away by a strong current in the river in Koottickal were recovered. The body of Riyas (47) was found on Tuesday morning, covered with mud, 100 metres away from where he got trapped in the currents.

The mishap happened at around 3 pm on Monday near Kokkayar in Koottickal. Riyas and his friends stepped down into the river to catch the objects floating downstream in the currents. It is believed that Riyas might have got trapped in the strong current and lost his strength to swim. Though the onlookers attempted to rescue him with a rope, Riyas could not reach it. Riyas was a porter at Koottickal town.

The water level in the river escalated due to the incessant rainfall on the previous day. It has become a usual scene here, where the natives attempt to catch woods and coconuts that float down with the overflowing water.
