Danger lurks around Ayyappanov waterfalls in Malappuram, which lacks proper safety arrangements

Thirunavaya: Ayyappanov waterfalls in Athavanad village without proper safety arrangements is raising concerns, as the number of people thronging the place are on the rise. It poses the risk of huge rocks tumbling over during heavy rains.

The authorities of Athavanad panchayat had set up a barricade near the waterfalls as per the instructions from Valanchery police. Police also placed a warning sign near the waterfalls. But the board and the barricade were destroyed recently.

Ayyappanov waterfalls is a sight to behold during the rainy season. The water falls from a height of more than 60 feet. There will be huge rush until the end of rainy season. People rush in with their families to enjoy the waterfalls and the underlying danger is often forgotten.

The way leading up to the waterfalls is also very dangerous. The steep descend of the way is risky and may lead to unwanted accidents if one is not cautious. Four years back, a Muzhangani native was killed after a rock fell over that person’s head.
