Dam not to be opened at present: MM Mani
Cheruthoni: Minister for electricity M. M. Mani said that Idukki dam need not be opened under the present circumstances. There is no rain in the catchment areas now. The water flow into the dam also has been reduced, he said.
KSEB officials also have informed that the dam need not be opened. Minister M. M. Mani will visit Idukki dam on Thursday. A meeting will be convened under his leadership at the collectorate to decide on trial run.
The present water level in Idukki dam is 2396.12 feet, which is 91.95 percent of the maximum storage capacity. There was only an increase of 0.2 feet after 6 o’clock on Thursday. The water level continues to remain at 2396.12 feet for the past few hours. This indicates that the water flow has been reduced considerably.
On Wednesday midnight, the water level was 2396.04 feet and on Thursday it rose to 2396.10 feet. The water level increased by only one feet after issuing the orange alert. However, the officials declared that there is no need to open the shutters before the water level reaches 2400 ft.
