Kondotty: A Superintendent of the Customs department was arrested for clearing a way for the carriers who smuggled gold via Karipur International Airport. Pollachi native P Muniyappa (46) had demanded Rs 25,000 for safely taking 320 gram out of the total 640 gram of smuggled gold out of the airport. Police have nabbed Kasaragod natives KH Abdul Naseer and KK Jamsheed, who were the carriers of the gold.

District police chief S Sujith Das will submit the report of the case to CBI and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence. It has been hinted that the case may be handed over to the CBI.

Muniyappa is the third Customs officer to receive suspension within a month following the timely intervention of police in gold smuggling. Another Customs superintendent Pramod Sabitha and havildar Sanith were suspended earlier for attempting to embezzle the seized gold without recording it.

A help desk was set up following the directions of the district police chief in January to track gold smuggling via Karipur airport. Following this, police could seize over 42 kilogram of gold worth Rs 23 crore through 52 cases to date.
