Kochi: Customs officials have started interrogating M Sivasankar who was arrested over gold smuggling case on Monday. He is being interrogated at the Kakkanad district jail here.
Customs have received permission to quiz him from 10 am to 5 pm. The court also directed Customs to allow Sivasankar to contact his lawyer and give a break of 30 minutes after every two hours of interrogation.
Sivasankar who was housed at a COVID First-Line Treatment Centre (CFLTC) was shifted to Kakkanad jail.
Customs is likely to name him as accused in gold smuggling case and dollar smuggling case.
After the interrogation, Customs will submit a report in the court mentioning about the economic offences.
In the report submitted before the court, Customs raised suspicion over Sivasankar’s involvement in gold smuggling. Customs will interrogate him on dollar smuggling also. He will be questioned based on digital evidence against him.
Customs will take action to arrest Sivasankar after obtaining permission to name him as accused in both cases. Hence, Customs is likely to arrest Sivasankar if the court grants him bail in the case registered by Enforcement Directorate.
Customs will interrogate Sivasankar based on Swapna Suresh’s last statement to ED. Earlier, Customs Commissioner has approached ED seeking a copy of Swapna’s statement.
In the statement to ED, Swapna revealed that M Sivasankar and his team in the Chief Minister’s office were aware of the gold smuggling.
