Customs nab couple for smuggling gold inside body and undergarments

Karipur: Customs arrested a couple, who allegedly smuggled gold, via Karipur International Airport while returning after a visit in Dubai with children. Two kilograms of gold mixture was seized from Koduvally native Sharafuddin (44) and his wife Shameena (37) who arrived at Kozhikode in SpiceJet flight, said sources.

The Customs officials reported that the couple tried to smuggle 2148 grams of gold mixture worth Rs 1.15 crore by hiding inside the body and undergarments. At least 950 grams were found inside four capsules swallowed by Sharafuddin while 1198 grams of gold was hidden in the underwear of Shameena.

The couple tried to misuse the consideration given for the passengers who arrive at the airport with family. The packets with gold mixtures were found from Shameena when Customs officials sensed suspicion and checked her in detail. Sharafuddin later confessed during interrogation, customs said.
