Thiruvananthapuram: In an unusual move, two politburo members of CPM stepped in to console G Sudhakaran after the party censured him publicly. CM Pinarayi Vijayan and Kodiyeri Balakrishnan had separate private audience with Sudhakaran after the meeting.
CPM used the complaint against Sudhakaran as a tool to end the cold war among party leaders in Alappuzha district. The action was mooted after taking Sudhakaran into confidence. The complainants were too 'satisfied' by the move.
The leadership was certain that action against Sudhakaran would hurt the veteran leader. While announcing the decision, Kodiyeri said: “It is the responsibility of a party leader to accept the committee decision. Corrections shall be made when necessary.”
After the meeting, Kodiyeri told Sudhakaran: “You have to unite and lead the Alappuzha faction of the party.”
Pinarayi also had a private audience with Sudhakaran at Cliff House after the committee meeting. This is also an unusual move in the party.
The enquiry committee on the complaint against Sudhakaran listed 23 accusations against him. He wanted to contest again from Ambalapuzha, it said. However, the committee did not agree with grave allegations levelled by the complainants, it is learnt.
It has to be noted that the party did not go for a tougher action as in the case of Kozhikode’s KP Kunhammed Kutty Master. After all, the charges against Master were indirect. That is not the case with Sudhakaran. Some of the allegations were confirmed by an enquiry committee headed by a central committee member.
